Our Classroom is Right Outside!

The Estuary EDventures program engages students in hands-on educational experiences through marine creature encounters, species collection and identification, and interactive habitat sessions.

Plankton Encounter Students collect a water sample and explore the importance of some of the smallest animals and plants in our ecosystem using microscopes.
Invertebrate Investigation Students learn about the characteristics of invertebrates, and concepts of morphology and behavior while getting up close with some of our local invertebrates.
Seine the Bay Students wade into the shallow seagrass beds, exploring the habitat and using nets to collect marine organisms.
Squid Dissection Students learn all about the unique adaptations of squid and dissection techniques through this group dissection.
Water Quality Lab Students learn about water quality parameters and use scientific tools to collect their own data from local samples of water, participating in a worldwide citizen science project.
Microplastics Students learn about the issues with plastic in the environment and use scientific tools to filter local samples of water in search of plastic, participating in a state-wide citizen science project.
Classroom Boat Otter Trawl Students go out on our 32’ USCG-inspected classroom vessel and learn about the collection technique of trawling while enjoying a boat ride on the calm waters of the bay.
Sand Dune Restoration Students participate in a local restoration effort by planting sea oats.
Coastal Cleanup Students participate in a local beach cleanup, recording and learning about the impact of their findings.
Kayak Tampa Bay Students paddle through the pristine Shell Key Preserve and learn about the unique estuary habitats.
Snorkel Tampa Bay Students explore bay habitats while practicing snorkeling techniques.
