More about Karen Baker
Karen Baker, CPS, PSA, PSTB
Interwoven with natural light and subtle emotion, Karen’s paintings are highly textural and expressive of her ongoing dialogue with Nature. “There’s a peace and completeness I resonate with in Nature. I especially love the soft, late afternoon sunlight, with its long shadows and warm colors.” Her landscapes are clearly recognizable by their dramatic skies and full-palette hues, whether she’s working in acrylics, watercolors, or pastels—her primary medium.
She paints both in the studio and outdoors in plein air and has participated in many juried regional and national shows, receiving awards and recognition for her artwork as well as from international art magazine competitions, including The Artist’s Magazine and The Pastel Journal.
When she starts a new painting, she uses plein air studies, value sketches, and photo references as visual aides that help identify what her “inner landscape” reveals about the essence of her subject. This practice serves as a springboard for the creative process that follows until the final image appears within the illusion of space. “For me, the painting process is much more interesting to behold than simply producing a work of art. It’s exciting to watch creativity in action, bringing images to “light” in the visual realm. It’s a spiritual joy ride…”
She is a Signature Member of the Connecticut Pastel Society, Pastel Society of America, and Pastel Society of Tampa Bay. She is also an artist member of Vermont Pastel Society, and The Exhibiting Society of Artists, Pinellas County, Florida. She studied extensively with the late Master Pastellist Herman Margulies and has attended workshops given by Wolf Kahn, and PSA signature members Stanley Maltzman, Elizabeth Apgar-Smith, Christina DeBarry, and Albert Handell.
In addition to creating original artwork, Baker teaches others how to express their innate creativity. “I love cultivating the creative process in people.” Here in Florida, she is on faculty at the Dunedin Fine Art Center and also at the Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg, where she offers classes in drawing and painting. An active member of the arts community, she supports many civic art projects through volunteering her time and talents. An ongoing exhibitor in regional and national shows, she is represented by galleries in New England and Florida and maintains a year-round studio at Stirling Art Studios & Gallery in Dunedin, Fl.
I’ve enjoyed a close relationship with Mother Nature ever since I was a child growing up along the Connecticut shore during the early 50s. Back then, kids were encouraged to play outdoors and explore their surroundings. For me, life was a great adventure climbing trees, wading through the salt marshes, swimming or fishing offshore. I believe the seeds were being planted in me then for the creative expressions that would follow.
Throughout my career as a landscape artist, I’ve become more and more aware of my position as a visual interpreter of this glorious “gift” we call planet earth. The quietude found in Nature continues to foster a peace and completeness within me that lies deep within all of us. It is our birthright to honor this heritage, which includes the essentials of clean air, clean water, and the immense beauty we see all around us every day.
My painted “impressions” of sea and sky are personal reflections of what I love and enjoy about the Tampa Bay area. Hopefully, they will be a pleasant reminder to viewers, as well, of why it is so essential to the health of our planet that we continue to work diligently to protect and preserve this miracle life of Mother Nature for eons to come…
