Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to build oyster reef balls. This task involves pouring marine-friendly concrete into a fiberglass mold to create oyster reef balls, then taking apart the molds when dry. The reef balls will be installed at a future date to stabilize shorelines and prevent erosion while creating habitat similar to natural oyster communities found along shoreline areas throughout Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers for a "Mono Clean-a-thon" at Tampa Bay Watch Marine Education Center, 3000 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, FL 33715.
We'll be cleaning "mono" or fishing line which involves sorting through the line to remove debris, then cutting out hooks and lures. The clean line will be contributed to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) statewide initiative for proper recycling and repurposing of used fishing line.

We will be installing an oyster shell bar and oyster reef balls and volunteers are needed for both duties. Oyster shell bar installation involves shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags and placing them on the shoreline to create a series of oyster bars. Reef ball installation is a heavy project as reef balls weigh 200 pounds each. Two people share the weight of each reef ball at a time to install it on the shoreline.
This project is an effort to restore lost habitat systems to the bay, prevent further erosion of the shoreline and improve water quality through natural biological filtration. Click here to read more about the project.
