Seasonal Education Specialist (EE Field Trips/Summer Camp)

Position Summary: The Seasonal Education Specialist facilitates and supports Estuary EDventures’ (EE)  field trips and Summer Camp at the Tampa Bay Watch Marine Education Center. He/she also assists in aquarium husbandry and program development. The position reports to the Director of Education.

Position Start and End Date: 5/3/2021- 8/13/2021

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as facilitator for EE field trip and summer camp programs / Teach students of various ages
  • Maintain Marine Education Center/Classroom and program materials
  • Design and implement education programs and materials 
  • Assist in the daily and weekly set-up, clean up, and facilitation of each program
  • Perform various in-field activities such as trawling, seining, and kayaking
  • Collect and identify species of the bay
  • Perform a variety of aquarium husbandry tasks
  • Assist in training and guiding interns and junior counselors
  • Serve as a mate on USCG-certified beach catamaran / Participate in USCG Consortium random drug testing program. 
  • Serve as kayak program lead 
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency protocol with the ability to make immediate necessary medical decisions and actions / Maintain valid adult and pediatric first aid and CPR/AED certifications
  • Participate in departmental meetings and trainings
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or seeking degree with relevant work experience
  • Experience with informal and/or formal education, and environmental and marine sciences
  • Public speaking and audience management skills
  • Maintain a safe working environment for personnel, students, and the aquarium collection
  • Comfortable in and on the water and handling marine organisms
  • Able to perform physical challenges involved in the daily duties of the department including: lifting/carrying equipment weighing approximately 50 lbs., sitting, kneeling, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching above head, pulling, bending, and climbing stairs. Candidates must be able and willing to perform all above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions.
  • Experience with boating/kayaking and waterfront programs preferred
  • Existing saltwater aquarium knowledge and husbandry experience preferred
  • Proficient with PC and Microsoft software, scientific tools and methods, and social media

 

Required Certifications/Courses or other Tampa Bay Watch Requirements:

  • First aid and CPR/AED certifications
  • USCG Consortium drug testing program for boating
  • Level II Background Screening
  • Proof of health insurance

 

Salary & Benefits:     

Starting hourly salary based upon experience. Benefits are not available.

Lead Boat Captain

General:

Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the marine and wetland environments of the Tampa Bay estuary through scientific and educational programs. Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. is working to preserve the delicate ecological balance that exists in Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay Watch performs a variety of habitat restoration and protection activities throughout the year utilizing thousands of volunteers annually to help the bay recover from its environmental problems. Education is a vital part of Tampa Bay Watch’s mission. The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is a significant new addition to the education and conservation efforts of Tampa Bay Watch and is integral to the advancement of our mission.

Position Summary:

At Tampa Bay Watch, we believe that our people make us great. Our friendly, enthusiastic teams help create delight to our visitors as they interact with guests and deliver the ultimate experiences.   Under the supervision of the Discovery Center’s Executive Director, the Boat Captain will supervise the vessel crew and direct safe day-to-day operations of the new 45’ Coast Guard Certified eco-vessel, “The Discovery.”

“The Discovery” will take multiple daily trips/tours from the new public docks at the St. Pete Pier along the St. Petersburg waterfront and surrounding local waters.  Trips can include school groups/students, summer camps, scheduled general public daily trips, sunset cruises and special events.  “The Discovery” is designed to carry children and adults across the open water for narrated environmental and social trips and also perform fisher trawls, dolphin observations, water quality monitoring and other science surveys as part of our programming.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to endure long periods outside in the heat, have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., have the dexterity and physical ability to be able to check engine fluids, conduct vessel inspections, as well as man overboard drills, and perform periodic maintenance on vessels.

Primary Responsibility:

The Captain must ensure that the crew follow proper safety procedures and practices; make certain the boat’s equipment and machinery are in working order, and be responsible for the safe loading and unloading of passengers.

Essential Job Functions:

The Captain is the lead TBW representative on the boat and is responsible at all times for the safe operation of the vessel and the safety and comfort of the passengers, including safe loading and unloading.  The Captain will also ensure maintenance and operation of the vessels, including general readiness of the vessel including: Fuel, water, waste and safety equipment. Scheduling of periodic maintenance and annual USCG inspections. Maintain vessel logs; including safety reports, passenger rosters and pre-sail vessel logs including inspection of navigation equipment, machinery fluid levels and electrical systems. The Captain will ensure each mate is qualified to perform their respective duties according to the USCG requirements including but not limited to being subject to an approved random drug testing program, performance of emergency procedures and safety drills.

Job Requirements: 

  • Current USCG Master of Steam near coastal 25 ton license (Minimum)
  • Radio telephone operator’s license required
  • First aid and CPR certification required for both adults and children required
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of small passenger vessels required, preferably in the Tampa Bay area waters
  • Experience with maneuvering vessels while trawl gear and other scientific tools deployed preferred
  • College degree preferred

 

Necessary Licenses or other Tampa Bay Watch Requirements:

  • US Coast Guard Master Captain License for 25 ton vessel (Inland or Near-Coastal).
  • Adult and Infant Care First Aid/CPR Certificate required.
  • Ability to trailer boats and utility trailers to project sites required.
  • Must be in US Coast Guard Drug Screening Program required.
  • Must pass a level II background screen, fingerprinting and random drug testing.

Camp Counselor

Position Title: Camp Counselor (Full-time Seasonal Position)

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for leading Tampa Bay Discovery Center’s summer day camps including our Sea Squirts (Ages 6-8) and Tarpons (Ages 9-12). The Counselor will work with the Education Department to implement all summer camp curriculums in a safe and fun manner. This position will help create a connection between campers and the Tampa Bay Estuary in a welcoming environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the overall safety of campers within the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center (TBWDC) and throughout the St. Petersburg Pier.
  • Prepare, teach, and implement camp curriculums in an efficient manner.
  • Regularly perform routine camp duties; such as setting up activity materials and equipment, breakdown, clean-up, etc.
  • Be knowledgeable of TBWDC’s mission, camp rules and policies, and navigation of St. Petersburg Pier.
  • Adhere to TBWDC’s standards on uniform, conduct, cleanliness, safety, and timeliness at all times.
  • Assist Education Coordinator in performing inventory and routine maintenance on summer camp materials.
  • Monitor and appropriately correct camper’s behavior by communicating with Education Coordinator
  • Responsible with familiarizing self with camp rosters and campers’ needs
  • Be comfortable with handling animal ambassadors in a classroom setting
  • Assist department with other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or seeking degree with relevant work experience
  • Must have at least six (6) months of prior experience working with children
  • Ability to work 40 hours a week
  • Experience with informal and/or formal education, and environmental and marine sciences
  • Animal experience preferred, but not required
  • Public speaking and audience management skills
  • Proficient with PC and Microsoft software and scientific tools and methods
  • The ability to work both indoors and outdoors in Florida’s environment, lift up to 50 lbs., and interact and engage on a high-energy level daily

 

Preferred Certifications/Courses

  • American Red Cross (First Aid, AED, CPR) preferred

  • Lifeguard certification or the ability to pass lifeguard certification required.

Guest Services Associate

Position Title:             Guest Services Associate

Position Summary:

Under supervision of the Operations Manager with support from the Guest Services Lead the Guest Services Associate will create a memorable experience for all guests and members at the Discovery Center.  Guest Services Associates will handle ticketing, sales, memberships, merchandise sales, giving tours, answering questions, and ensuring that all visitors have a great experience.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform these physical movements: stand for extended periods of time; use hands to operate, activate, prepare, inspect, place, detect, and position objects; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; walk.  The employee occasionally is required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift, push, and/or move displays and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds around the Discovery Center.  All employees will be expected to help with the daily upkeep and cleanliness of the facility.

Primary Responsibility: The Guest Services Associates are at the front lines of our operation and ensure that all members and guests have a positive experience in our facility.  A positive attitude and high energy are needed to ensure that we maintain a fantastic atmosphere each day in a year-round operation.

Duties include:

  • Maintains good communication with co-workers and guests alike, maintains a positive attitude that contributes to a fun and productive work environment
  • Properly greets and welcomes visitors by being attentive, helpful and courteous
  • Sells daily and group tickets, memberships and merchandise through the POS system and maintains daily records and follow proper cash handling instructions
  • Responsible for balancing POS receipts for their shift
  • Learns and demonstrates knowledge of all ticket options, merchandise, programs and special events
  • Receives merchandise, prices items, restocks product and stores goods
  • Provides exceptional guest service while performing day to day operations
  • Answers questions, provides directions and educates guests regarding the Discovery Center, Tampa Bay Watch, the Pier, St. Petersburg and upcoming events at the Discovery Center
  • As directed, books group tours for the Discovery Center
  • Gives tours, answers phone inquiries, assists guests, members and volunteers
  • Stocks merchandise and supplies, cleans and contributes to the overall cleanliness of the facility
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Experience Required:

  • High school diploma/GED is required
  • Completion of a satisfactory DCF Level II Background Screening
  • Experience working with a small team in a high volume guest-focused environment preferred
  • Positive attitude that contributes to a fun and productive work environment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and holidays
